Amy Carlson – an Ally to the ME Community

Listen to the article:

Allies are critical to the success of any movement and even more so in the case of people with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). So many people with ME are bedridden or housebound and unable to participate in some advocacy and activist actions. While we at #MEAction work hard to make advocacy accessible, we also depend on allies to help our cause.

Amy Carlson has been a special ally to the #ME community. She is an actress known for her roles in Blue Bloods and Third Watch. She is a social justice advocate, feminist and humanitarian. Carlson recently received the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award for Gender Equality.

Amy’s dear friend, Anne Berry, was lost to ME. Last year, Amy participated in New York’s #MillionsMissing event, as well as ME/CFS Advocacy Week in D.C. She has shown up in person and shared her platform for the ME community. Carlson says, “It is my honor to advocate for all those who cannot because of the toll of ME/CFS.”

She recently shared a year in review video for 2018 and included her participation in these events in it. Take a look! Consider passing along a thank you for Amy’s efforts and a reminder that we hold her friend Anne Berry in our hearts. Tweet her or send her a message on Instagram, or on Facebook.

Think about the people in your life that might be willing to be an ally for people with ME. Reach out to them. If you are a friend of someone with ME, we would love to have you join our movement!

Our major upcoming projects where we need as much healthy ally support as possible are:

  • Advocacy Week 2019, where we hold a week of meetings with Congress about ME, with virtual call-in actions and online events from April 1 – 7th, and Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. on April 3.  Get involved.
  • #MillionsMissing 2019, as shown in the video, is our global movement where we come together to demonstrate for ME on the streets or virtually on May 12th. We need as much participation as possible. Get involved.
