#MEAction Celebrates Powerful Women

March is Women’s History Month and we want to acknowledge and celebrate the amazing women in our community. Estimates range from 75% to 85% of people with ME are women.  We have a community that consists of powerful women who keep our advocacy work moving forward. To celebrate these incredible figures #MEAction asked some of our volunteers to share what makes them feel powerful, someone they admire that is powerful , and what makes the #MEAction family powerful together.

For the month of March look out on our social media where we will be sharing some powerful words from some powerful women. Please feel free to share what makes you feel powerful as well on social media to celebrate the incredible person you are! ME takes so much from us but it’s important to remember that we are powerful women and what we fight for today will one day be women’s history. Men, women, nonbinary folks- everyone is welcome to join in!

Volunteer Cory Anderson shared this example of what makes her feel powerful to help start us off!

“I find strength and light in recognizing and celebrating the things I value in others. Sending a text to remind someone that I love them or how they make the world a better place and then feeling the way they brighten on the other side of that…its such a simple act on my end, but it feels like such a powerful, goodness filled impact. Even baking- making something specially for someone whether it is a favorite flavor of theirs or specifically tailored around an allergy or dietary need- makes people feel seen and cared about and I always finish with a heart so much fuller than before.”

– Cory Anderson-Sweeney, #MEAction Georgia State Chapter member

The second week of March, we will focus on what empowers you. The third week will be focused on someone else you see as powerful (get those shout-outs ready!). Finally week 4 is about the power in our community.

At a time where it is easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless, it is good to remember the power we each have and to pay tribute to the powerful women we admire.

Quotes From Volunteers

“I feel powerful when I recognize the endurance I have in this body. My pain tolerance is so high. My balance is astounding. When I recognize how much I endure, I see my power.”- Jessica Kaushansky, #MEAction Volunteer

“It is the heart and the emotions that we are given that make me feel powerful as a woman. We are intuitive, nurturing, strong, bold, fierce, passionate, loving and I feel powerful in the knowledge that I am able to express these through poetry, photography, writing and insight. Women’s intuition, foresight and forethought make me feel powerful, the emotions that we can both contain and turn into powerful tools to help others are astounding. I feel powerful when I am centering myself during yoga or meditation, I feel powerful when I can love others fully and give that love and kindness in abundance as I feel that is something needed so much in this world.”- Robyn Goldstone, #MEAction Volunteer

“What makes me feel empowered is being able to speak my mind!”- Grace Miller, #MEAction Volunteer

“As a woman I feel powerful knowing even when I was severely ill I was always a loving Mother.”- Danielle Gillian, #MEAction Volunteer

“Me siento empoderada por el deseo de ayudar a otras personas.

I feel empowered by the desire to help others.”- Leticia, #MEAction Volunteer

We are celebrating the women in our community for Women’s History Month! This week, we are focusing on a woman we admire and how they are powerful. We have some lovely shares for you in writing and in videos! So be on the lookout for videos we will be sharing later today!

We invite you to join in the comments and share a woman that you admire and what makes them powerful! You can also share your own post or video and give us a tag.

Next week, we will be focusing on women in our community if you want to prepare ahead of time!

Thank you to our volunteers for their efforts.

“When thinking of powerful women, the first person that came to mind was Judy Huemann. She was a literal warrior who fought the New York Board of Education for the right to teach in a wheelchair and organized occupation of the Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare with over 100 disabled people who refused to leave until section 504 was SIGNED. This woman relentlessly fought for human and civil rights of disabled people without pause. The books Rolling Warrior and Being Heumann are more profound than ever as we face yet another attack on Section 504. Judy Heumann was a true hero. We must continue her legacy.”-Jessica Kaushansky

“My big sister leads with so much kindness and compassion and always has a safe, soft place for those around her to land. She has been such a formative influence on teaching me to live with unapologetic passion for justice, empathy, and kindness while also being an exceptional role model for living softly- caring for my own needs always so that I can better care for others.”-Cory Anderson-Sweeney

“Mis padres, mis hijas y mi esposo han sido una fuente de apoyo y motivación que me fortalece y empodera debido al amor que siento por ellos y por su dulces, amorosas y bondadosas personalidades que tanto admiro y valoro. My parents, my daughters and husband have been a source of support and motivation that strengthen and empower me due to the love I feel for them and their sweet, loving and caring personalities that I so admire and cherish”-Leticia

On this final week of Women’s History Month, we focused on community—the powerful women in our community and what makes us powerful together! Take a look at their thoughts below:

“A powerful woman in the ME community I admire is Jaime Seltzer, Scientific Director of #MEAction, Stanford Med researcher, person with ME, and one of Time 100’s most influential people in Health 2024. Her research has been priceless to me – I take her papers to doctor’s appointments! Her insights, experiences and expertise have taught me so much about ME/CFS. She is a contemporary hero in the field of IACCIs. Thank you, Jaime!” Jessica Kaushansky

“I am perpetually astounded by the ME community. There is such an overwhelming sense of care that gets channelled into a passionate advocacy and unwavering support and collaboration. As Liz Burlingame says so aptly, ‘We are stronger together.'” Cory Anderson-Sweeney

“One person who has really inspired me is Katie, from #MEAction (a fellow volunteer). Katie always makes me feel strong. She is kind and so passionate about this condition and spreading awareness. Talking to her is always a delight, and I’m glad that we got to meet each other!” Grace Miller

“Por medio de la colaboración y solidaridad dentro de nuestra comunidad podemos encontrar una excelente fuente de comodidad y fortaleza que encuentro muy empoderante. (Through collaboration and solidarity within our community we can find an excellent resource for comfort and strength that I find very empowering.)” Leticia

#MEAction’s Holly Latham, wrote a lovely post describing her appreciation for the Empowered Women of the #MEAction Community. Take a read here!
